BC07 Getting Involved: Guidelines

Breakin' Convention is the UK's festival of hip hop dance theatre. Held at Sadler's Wells, London, it presents a programme of hip hop dance theatre companies from across the globe. There is a programme of other events, this includes Future Elements, a night of work by young choreographers for young dancers. The dates for BC07 are Saturday 5 to Monday 7 May 2007 followed by a month long Tour around the UK.

Breakin' Convention does not want to prescribe what you should create; we love the fact that companies continue to break the conventions of hip hop dance. .However, there are a few things that are really important for companies who want to be in the festival.

What sort of work are you making and performing? We are interested in companies who:

  • Are using hip hop dance styles in a different and exciting way
  • Have a story to tell or a concept to explore
  • Are making a statement about life today - this might be political, social or about life as a young person
  • Are able to create an atmosphere and take an audience to another world or state of mind
  • Have a vision for the future of hip hop dance theatre
Each of the companies who have performed in BC'04, '05 and '06 were unique. Remember that you don't need a huge company of dancers to make a powerful piece; Frank Ejara (Brazil) performed a solo show. You don't need a large set; Top 9 (Russia) had no set. Start with your idea and remain true to it, dare to be different.

In BC06 there were experienced artists from the UK who have been working for over ten years, there were also young people making their first work. Don't rule yourself out.

If we like the work that we see we will get in contact with you to find out more. We will be interested in:
  • Your idea - is there a story line, theme or vision for the piece?
  • Have you performed it before or is it new?
  • What music are you using? - Chart music / mixed / new commission / live (DJ or vocals).
  • How many dancers and, if under 18, how old they are? - There is a maximum of 20 per company.
  • Have you performed as a group before, if so where?
  • Do you have photographs of the Company?
Please note that due to demand the Breakin' Convention team will not be able to respond to unsuccessful companies. If you are not selected to perform in BC07 do not give up, we want to hear from you in the future.
