The revolution will be mobilised!
Breakin’ Convention brings you Power to the Pixel! We are looking for four film-makers to create a film with the stimulus:
“If artistic expression was banned, how would you resist?”
With most modern revolutions being captured on devices in our pockets and posted on social media, the challenge of Power to the Pixel is that you can only use your smartphone to film.
The film can be told using any or all of the disciplines of hip hop: rapping, dancing, turntablism, and graffiti.
Besides this, your ideas, concepts and experimentation are completely up to you.
As well as a commission to make your film, Breakin’ Convention will also mentor you, helping shape your vision. Working with BCTV alumnus Ben Williams (Pro:Files, Our Bodies Back, Madhead) and Ben Wachenje (Akala, Brixton Street Gym and Breakin’ Convention graphic designer).
In addition, you’ll be given tips and advice on making incredible work that isn’t limited by the equipment you have.
In order to qualify, you need:
The ability to film and edit, with a smartphone as the means of capturing your footage.
You do not need professional equipment, but you must be able to make your work look polished.
A track record of being able to turn around high quality, engaging content, quickly.
Can effectively communicate their idea and collaborate with the mentors to bring it to life.
Want to apply? Here’s what you need to do:
STAGE 1
Show us examples of your work. Email a selection of your best to info@breakinconvention.com with a proposal of what you might create for this project. Also, tag your film posts on social media with #powertothepixel on Instagram or Facebook by Friday 7 May. We are particularly interested from hearing from people who identify as female or non-binary.
STAGE 2
A shortlist of applicants will be selected and invited to have a conversation with the mentors by Tuesday 11 May. We will discuss what your idea is and how we might go about creating it. The four successful film makers will be notified by Thursday 13 May.
